Students celebrated the International Day of Peace with a soccer match. 

The family of Astrid N. Sambolin Morales, Ph.D., an assistant professor at �þ���ҹ����ӰԺ��ѹۿ� State, is dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Fiona in Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico. They have been without electricity since the storm hit Sunday Sept. 18, 2022.

The first full week of fall is also the most spirited week at �þ���ҹ����ӰԺ��ѹۿ�. The week of Sept. 26 to Oct. 1 is Spirit Week and includes homecoming weekend at �þ���ҹ����ӰԺ��ѹۿ� State. The week will be full of events celebrating �þ���ҹ����ӰԺ��ѹۿ� State spirit.

It may surprise you to learn that “Captain Underpants,” “Frankenstein,” “The Great Gatsby,” “Hunger Games” and “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” are all popular books that have been banned, along with many others. In honor of Banned Books Week, the Second Annual Banned Books Read-In was held in Taylor Hall.

�þ���ҹ����ӰԺ��ѹۿ� State baseball held walk-on tryouts for student players last week. 

Owning a pet can tell marketers all they need to know about your buying tendencies. In a new study, Lei Jia, assistant professor of marketing and entrepreneurship at �þ���ҹ����ӰԺ��ѹۿ� State, found that pet ownership can influence and predict consumer behavior. 

This past summer, two �þ���ҹ����ӰԺ��ѹۿ� students were awarded medals in the U.S. Collegiate Figure Skating Championships, sanctioned by U.S. Figure Skating, the national governing body for the sport of figure skating in the country. It is the highest level at which figure skating takes place at the college level.

Two professors from �þ���ҹ����ӰԺ��ѹۿ�’s College of Education, Health and Human Services returned from a trip to the University of Rwanda (UR) energized by the new partnerships and collaborations they formed there.

Time is running out to register to vote in November's elections.

The �þ���ҹ����ӰԺ��ѹۿ� Board of Trustees welcomed the Class of 2026 at the Board’s regular quarterly meeting held Sept. 21 at the �þ���ҹ����ӰԺ��ѹۿ� Airport. �þ���ҹ����ӰԺ��ѹۿ� State’s freshman class began classes on the �þ���ҹ����ӰԺ��ѹۿ� Campus nearly 7% larger than the previous year with 4,251 students – the eighth largest incoming class in the university’s 112-year history. 

�þ���ҹ����ӰԺ��ѹۿ�’s Class of 2026 has arrived on the �þ���ҹ����ӰԺ��ѹۿ� Campus in strong numbers – 4,251 to be exact – an increase of nearly 7% over the previous year, the largest class since before the pandemic and the eighth largest incoming class in the university’s 112-year history. 

On this 21st day of September, we remember when Earth, Wind and Fire played at the �þ���ҹ����ӰԺ��ѹۿ� Student Center in October 1973. 

�þ���ҹ����ӰԺ��ѹۿ� State’s support for its military-connected community continues to embody leadership and inclusivity as the �þ���ҹ����ӰԺ��ѹۿ� Campus has been named an official 2022-2023 Military Spouse Friendly® School by Viqtory. Out of 1,800 participating schools, �þ���ҹ����ӰԺ��ѹۿ� State was one of 665 to receive the Military Friendly School designation in March, and the university is now one of 346 institutions to earn the Military Spouse Friendly School recognition. 

Members of the �þ���ҹ����ӰԺ��ѹۿ� community can take great pride in their university’s hometown. The city of �þ���ҹ����ӰԺ��ѹۿ� has been selected by Ohio Magazine as a 2022-2023 Best Hometown. The Best Hometown honor recognizes �þ���ҹ����ӰԺ��ѹۿ� as a great place to live, work and visit.

The performance, titled  will have its opening night at 7 p.m. Oct. 24, in the 700-seat auditorium of the National Academy of Science in Washington, D.C. 

Students can receive free climbing instruction Monday and Tuesday evenings at the Warren Student Recreation and Wellness Center. 

The �þ���ҹ����ӰԺ��ѹۿ� State Student Multicultural Center will be renamed the E. Timothy Moore Student Multicultural Center in recognition of a gift from a former student, D'Andra Mull, Ph.D.

Using poetry to explore Akron, Ohio residents’ sense of belonging to their neighborhoods is the goal of a new project by �þ���ҹ����ӰԺ��ѹۿ�’s Wick Poetry Center.
